Significance

In Canada $31 Billion is wasted in food on an annual basis. The bulk of it (47%) comes from consumers, and they have an important role to play in ending food waste, however our group believes that to make a significant dent in food waste it needs to start at the retail level (10%).

We have seen in France the success of  law that makes it illegal for grocery stores to waste food. This is significant, because the food has to be donated, and this helps feed so many people. In Calgary, we believe that a bylaw would make a huge impact on food waste, as well as inspire other cities to take charge and turn 10% to 0%.

This will be significant to the Global Challenge, because to feed 9 billion people, we need to stop wasting the food we have. Once food is no longer wasted and provided to those who need it, then we will understand how to move forward with feeding the world.
