January Progress

New Semester. Same Challenge.

How are we going to feed 9 billion people by the year 2050?

I can’t answer that just yet, because there are so many solutions. Some already in place and some yet to be discover. For now, my group and I plan to work local, making change in Calgary and hopefully inspiring global change.

Our group has decided to focus this semester on the criminalization of food waste in Calgary. With our project last semester we were able to see how Canada as a whole is affected by food waste. We have decided to work locally because we believe Calgary is within our scope of influence, and that we can make the most change.

Our plan for the semester is to put together a interview documentary on Calgarians, and Calgary organizations in regards to food waste. As of today we’ve already scheduled 4 interviews, and are in contact with multiple people and companies.

Once our documentary is complete, we hope able to meet with Calgary’s municipal council and present our video as well as a by-law hoping to make it illegal for grocery stores (and potentially other organizations) to waste food. They will have to donate it, (which is already possible under provincial legislature, Charitable Donation of Food Act) and if it is no longer edible, disposed of in an in an environmentally friendly manner (i.e. composting).
