Structured Controversy

Be it resolved that all garbage and waste is recycled or burnt and used for energy.

Although it’s a small article, it explains the United Nations perspective of garbage recycling. It was more specifically from the United Nations Environmental Programme (UNEP) saying that we need to conserve the environment, and that there is the “opportunity to generate energy from gas emanating from garbage at the dumpsites.”

I couldn’t find any articles about the Green Party’s opinion on waste to energy however, the Green Party website has a section which lays out their ideas for climate and energy strategies.

“We need to invest in an infrastructure that promotes renewable energy, a more robust east-west electricity grid to promote renewable energy transmission between provinces, while reducing the enormous waste in our energy systems. We still waste more than half the energy we use. It’s time to save money and reduce pollution by going after waste.” and “It incentivizes investment in sustainable jobs and green technology, discourages waste and pollution…” These quote from their website and shares their views showing that our be it resolved is one of their goals.

“Environmental citizenship in multinational corporations: social responsibility and sustainable development”

This article carries the perspective of multi/transnational corporations and their disagreements towards sustainability. “Unless companies see the business advantages as well as the social values of sustainable environmental practices and internalize those values, they are unlikely to integrate proactive environmental management practices into their overall business strategies.” this quote elaborates on a general view held by businesses, that if sustainability is not legally binding or will benefit them in any way, then it isn’t really of great importance to them.

Energy Companies ( Covanta )

(“Waste Minimization.” Waste Minimization – Covanta, www.covanta.com/Our-Solutions/Sustainable-Materials-Management/Waste-Minimization. )

https://www.covanta.com/

Covanta is a waste to energy company whose main goal is that “no waste is ever wasted”. The source I have used is the company website which underlines their views on sustainability as well as showing what the company does with the waste and what comes after the waste is burned. “Covanta is committed to helping communities and organizations solve their sustainability challenges through forward-thinking solutions that divert waste from landfills, and use it to generate renewable energy.  In all that we do, we strive to ensure that our services, facilities and activities are managed in an environmentally-responsible way that is good for our business, our society and our planet.” There perspective revolves around making garbage to energy facilities universally used and keeping it green.
